Mental Health in Calgary: When to Seek Help and Where to Start

OMEGA·Medical Clinic

Mental health is health. Yet many Calgarians wait years to seek help — often because they don't know where to start, or because mental illness still carries stigma in their family or culture.

We want to change that. At Omega Medical Clinic, mental health conversations are a normal, welcomed part of every visit.

You Don't Have to Wait Until It's a Crisis

Common reasons people come to us for mental health support:

  • Persistent low mood that lasts more than 2 weeks
  • Constant worry or anxiety that interferes with work, sleep, or relationships
  • Sleep disruption — trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early
  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Feeling overwhelmed by daily life
  • Burnout at work or home
  • Grief that isn't easing
  • Postpartum mood changes
  • Adolescent mood or behavior changes
  • Substance use concerns
  • Family conflict or relationship stress
  • Trauma — recent or from the past

You don't need to be in crisis. If something feels off, that's reason enough to talk.

What a First Mental Health Visit Looks Like

It's just a conversation. There's no test you can fail.

  1. We listen to what brought you in — without rushing
  2. We screen using validated tools (PHQ-9 for depression, GAD-7 for anxiety) to give us an objective baseline
  3. We discuss what might be contributing — life events, sleep, physical health, medications, family history
  4. We offer options — which might include lifestyle adjustments, therapy referrals, medication, or a combination
  5. We follow up — mental health care isn't a single visit

Everything is confidential. Nothing goes on a record that affects your job or insurance unless you specifically request documentation.

Treatment Pathways We Offer

Talk therapy (psychotherapy) referrals

We refer to:

  • Calgary Counselling Centre — sliding-scale fees, often within 1–2 weeks
  • Access Mental Health (Alberta Health Services) — free, 1-800 number triages you to local services
  • Private psychologists — covered by many extended health plans
  • Specialized programs — postpartum, addictions, trauma, eating disorders

Medication management

For moderate to severe symptoms, medication can be life-changing. We start with the safest, evidence-based options and adjust carefully. Our on-site pharmacy makes prescription pickup easy.

Specialist psychiatry referral

For complex cases, we refer to psychiatrists for diagnostic assessment and specialized medication management. Wait times in Alberta vary — we'll give you realistic expectations and bridge care while you wait.

Lifestyle medicine

Often underestimated. We discuss:

  • Sleep hygiene — single biggest impact on mood
  • Exercise — proven to be as effective as some antidepressants for mild-to-moderate depression
  • Nutrition — diet affects brain chemistry
  • Substance use — alcohol and recreational drugs significantly worsen mental health
  • Social connection — isolation is a major risk factor

A Note for South Asian Families

In many South Asian families, mental health is still treated as taboo — something to manage privately, often through religion or family alone. This silence can cost lives.

You can absolutely combine your faith and family support with professional medical care. Many of our patients do exactly that. Our multilingual physicians (English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu) understand the cultural context and can help you have these conversations with your family if you want.

Take the First Step

You don't need to figure this out alone. Whether you're not sure if what you're feeling counts as "real," or you've been struggling for years and don't know where to turn — we're here.
